Who are K&J?

K is for Kimberly, and J is for Jonathan. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s jump into it.

Kim and I met in 2016 (I think) and got married in 2020 (I think). We met in San Francisco while I was getting my Masters at U.C. Berkeley and Kim was running Gap, Inc.’s stock program. Kim and I each had our own interesting journey’s to San Francisco which will will dive into (briefly).

As an Air Force brat, Kim moved all over the U.S. but calls Alexandria, VA home. In 2010, Kim was recruited by BYU for basketball but unfortunately had to redshirt due to a shoulder injury. After watching Wolf of Wall Street, Kim decided she would drop out of school and become a stock broker (crazy, right?). Her stock broker career transitioned into a career in equity compensation and landed her a role in San Francisco at Gap, Inc.

Meanwhile, I went to West Point in 2012 and commissioned as an Engineer officer in 2016. My first assignment was as a research assistant for the Department of Engineer while simultaneously getting my Masters in Civil Engineering at Berkeley.

Fast forward to 2020, Kim and I tied the knot and started buying properties together. Our original goal was to reach our retirement number: 20,000/month in passive income and our original strategy was to acquire 10% ROI properties. While a good strategy, it called for $2,400,000 in capital to meet our retirement goal!!! Then we transitioned to focusing on multifamily, and luckily we did this as the Fed raised rates into the 7%+ range (this was sarcasm if you didn’t catch it)!

Now we are in 2023 and while our goal is the same, our strategy has adjusted to the market. We buy single family and multifamily houses in military markets. If you want to know why, I’ll see you on the next post.
